DETOUR VILLAGE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A suspect has been arrested following a break-in at DeTour Area Schools, which prompted administrators to cancel classes on October 1. According to police, there is no known danger to the school, students, faculty, or community.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a report of a man who had broken into DeTour Area Schools and was still inside. School staff saw him when they arrived early to prepare for the school day, leading them to call 911.
Troopers arrived, located the man, and took him into custody. They did not find any weapons with him. Troopers determined that he had damaged property inside the school, including computers, and had left some areas in disarray.
Due to the necessary cleanup and damage assessment, school officials initially delayed the start of school before ultimately canceling classes for the day. Classes are tentatively scheduled to resume as usual on October 2.
The man, a 24-year-old from DeTour Village, was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on charges of breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property. The investigation is ongoing.
